The Seventh-day Adventist denomination began in the mid 1840’s with a group of people from various denominations (mainly Methodist, Presbyterian, and Baptist). Their study of the Bible led them to believe that the return (advent) of Jesus was imminent. Further study led them to believe that the seventh day of the week was the biblical day of worship. Because of the relative uniqueness of these two beliefs, they became known as Seventh-day Adventists.
From the beginning, Adventists have taken seriously Jesus’ command to “go throughout the world and preach the gospel.” Today the Adventist church has over 18 million members in over 200 countries.
Adventists place a high value on Christian education. Today, with over 7,200 schools and over 1.5 million students, Adventists operate the second largest faith-based educational system in the world.
